Moles or Warts

Moles or Warts

Visible moles and warts can be harmless, but they often cause self-consciousness and discomfort in daily life. Moles, or nevi, appear as small dark brown spots that can change in appearance over time, while warts are small, grainy growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can be bothersome, painful, and even embarrassing, especially when they develop on areas like the fingers or hands. At Clinic Dermatech, our experienced dermatologists offer safe, advanced treatments tailored to your skin type and concerns, helping you achieve clearer, healthier-looking skin with greater confidence.

What is Moles or Warts?

Moles are small, pigmented growths on the skin caused by clusters of melanocyte cells. They can be flat or raised, brown or black, and may appear anywhere on the body. Most moles are harmless, though some may change in size, shape, or colour over time. Warts are small, rough growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can develop on the fingers, hands, feet, or face, and tend to be stubborn if left untreated. Both moles and warts can affect your comfort and confidence, particularly when they appear on visible areas.

Causes of Moles or Warts

  • 1Moles: Genetic factors that determine where and how many moles develop
  • 2Moles: Sun and UV exposure, which can increase the number of moles and change existing ones
  • 3Moles: Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, or with certain medications
  • 4Warts: Infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters through small cuts or breaks in the skin
  • 5Warts: Direct contact with someone who has warts or with contaminated surfaces
  • 6Warts: A weakened immune system, which makes it harder for the body to fight off HPV
  • 7Warts: Moisture and sweating, especially on the hands and feet, which create a favourable environment for the virus
  • 8Both: Friction or irritation to the area, which can cause moles to grow or warts to spread

Prevention Tips

  • 1Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas daily to protect existing moles from UV-related changes
  • 2Monitor your moles regularly for any changes in size, shape, colour, border, or symmetry
  • 3Avoid scratching, picking, or rubbing moles, as this can cause irritation or injury
  • 4Do not share personal items like towels, razors, or nail clippers to reduce HPV transmission risk
  • 5Keep hands and feet clean and dry, as moisture encourages wart development
  • 6Wear footwear in communal areas like gyms, pools, and locker rooms to avoid contact with HPV
  • 7If a mole changes in appearance or a wart persists or spreads, see a dermatologist promptly
  • 8Avoid attempting to cut or burn off moles or warts at home, as this can lead to infection and scarring
