Enlarged or Open Pores

They usually appear on the nose, cheeks, and forehead, and are more noticeable in oily or combination skin types. What is Enlarged or Open Pores?

Open or enlarged pores are small openings on the skin's surface that appear more visible than usual, giving the skin a rough or textured look. They are most noticeable on the nose, cheeks, and forehead. While every person has pores and they serve an important function in releasing oil and sweat, their size and visibility vary depending on skin type, age, and how well they are maintained. Enlarged pores can also make the skin more prone to blackheads and breakouts.

Causes of Enlarged or Open Pores

  • 1Excess sebum production, which stretches pores and makes them appear larger
  • 2Oily or combination skin types, which are naturally more prone to visible pores
  • 3Aging and loss of skin elasticity, causing pores to sag and look more open
  • 4Sun damage, which thickens the outer layer of skin and enlarges the pore opening
  • 5Clogged pores from oil, dead cells, and makeup residue that stretch them over time
  • 6Genetics, as pore size is largely inherited
  • 7Frequent squeezing of blackheads or pimples, which can permanently widen pores
  • 8Using heavy, pore-clogging skincare or makeup products

Prevention Tips

  • 1Cleanse your face thoroughly twice a day to prevent oil and debris from building up in pores
  • 2Use a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells that can clog and stretch pores
  • 3Choose non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products that do not block pores
  • 4Apply sunscreen daily, as sun damage worsens pore visibility over time
  • 5Avoid touching or squeezing your skin, especially around the nose and cheeks
  • 6Use a clay-based mask once a week to absorb excess oil and tighten the skin temporarily
  • 7Stay hydrated, as well-moisturised skin maintains better elasticity around pores
  • 8Consult a dermatologist for professional treatments if pores remain visibly enlarged despite a good skincare routine
